Wasted $80 on a cheap boning knife that wouldn't hold an edge

Bought a no-name stainless steel boning knife off Amazon thinking I was being smart with my money. After about 2 weeks of breaking down chuck rolls it was dull as butter knife. Has anyone else learned this lesson the hard way or am I the only one who fell for the flashy pictures?

Oh man, the shiny pics on Amazon get me every time too. I mean, I fell for that exact thing with a "German steel" chef's knife that couldn't cut through a tomato after a month. What worked for me was just biting the bullet and getting a Victorinox Fibrox boning knife. It's like $40 and honestly holds an edge way longer than I expected for the price. You might also want to check if you're using a honing rod before each use, that helps any blade keep its edge a bit better.

I read somewhere that honing rods mostly just straighten the edge rather than sharpen it, which @kellyr18 confirmed with that tomato test.
