I keep seeing reviews that mix up fit and finish with actual quality
People will give a five star rating because the packaging was nice and the thing looked good in photos, but then three months later they are posting about how it broke. I notice it a lot with smaller kitchen gadgets like can openers and peelers. Have other folks observed this trend where the first impression overshadows the real test of time?

Don't you think part of the problem is that people just don't know what to look for when something is new? Like with a can opener, the smooth action and how it looks sitting on the counter is what catches your eye, but the real test is if the gears start slipping after 30 cans. I see the same thing with electronics and even clothes. Someone buys a jacket because the zipper feels nice and the stitching looks clean in the store, but after a few washes the fabric starts pilling or the seams come loose. It's like we've trained ourselves to judge something based on what we can see in five minutes instead of what we'll find out in five months. And the reviews system just rewards that first impression because most people write their review right after opening the box, not after actually using the thing.

Yeah I read something about this recently, how the "unboxing experience" basically replaced actual quality for a lot of people. The packaging is nice and the thing looks clean so they assume it's well made, but that's just marketing.
