My dad told me to always check the one-star reviews first, back in 2012.

I was looking at a new lawn mower online and almost bought a highly-rated model. He said to read the bad reviews to see what really breaks or annoys people. I did, and saw a pattern of the engine seizing after two seasons. I bought a different brand that's still running today. Do you guys have a specific review-reading rule you always follow?

Read the bad reviews first" is just smart pattern recognition for everything now.

My buddy Dave bought a tent with all five star reviews. The first bad review he found later said it leaks at every seam in light rain. He spent a whole camping trip in a wet sleeping bag.

My method is to read the middle star reviews first. I find the three-star ones give a more balanced view than just the worst cases, like margaret99 mentioned. That's where people usually list both the good and the real drawbacks.
