TIL I was reading Amazon reviews wrong for months

I finally figured out that sorting by 'most recent' instead of 'top rated' gives you the real story on a product after a $50 hose nozzle leaked on day one but had 4.5 stars overall, anyone else find that trick buried in the settings?

Sorting by newest reviews is actually the default on some Amazon pages. Most people just don't notice it changes to top rated when they shop around. Its a handy trick though for newer items where ratings haven't built up yet.

Wait, isn't it true that Amazon actually tweaks the default settings depending on what you're looking at? I read an article a while back that said they change it based on how popular a product is or something shady like that. @alicea26 you're right that most people don't even catch when it flips on them, because who actually digs into those dropdown menus every time? Honestly I've been burned by "top rated" sorting before because those reviews are all from people who bought the item years ago and the current batch is totally different. Makes me wonder if Amazon does it on purpose to keep older products afloat while new stuff struggles to get seen.
