Warning: That $80 grill thermometer I bought lied to me for 2 months
I was grilling steaks in my backyard in Austin last Saturday and noticed my $80 Bluetooth thermometer said the grill was at 450 degrees. But the meat was barely cooking after 15 minutes, which felt off. I grabbed my old analog thermometer from the drawer and it read 310 degrees - a huge difference. Turns out the digital probe was defective from the start, showing false high temps. I contacted the company and they sent a replacement after I showed video proof, but I lost two months of good cooks. Has anyone else caught a thermometer reading way off from reality?

Does your old analog thermometer ever act up when it's humid out?

Huh, I've got a 1957 Taylor mercury thermometer that's been in the same spot on my porch since the 80s. Rain, fog, 100% humidity, it doesn't budge more than a degree from what our local weather station says. I'd argue the opposite actually, those old glass thermometers with the red liquid are way more stable than the digital ones that freak out when moisture gets in the sensor. Maybe yours has a cracked tube or needs to be cleaned off if the dirt is trapping moisture.
