Warning: The 4-star review trap on old sewing machines

Bought a 1978 Singer from a seller with 300+ reviews, all 4 stars. Felt safe, but the 4 stars were for fast shipping, not function. The bobbin tension was off, and when I opened it up, the gears were cracked. One 1-star review from three years ago mentioned the same exact issue, and I skipped it. Why do people leave 4 stars when the thing barely works? Has anyone else found that 4-star rating to be more dangerous than 3 or 5?

Stopped reading when you said cracked gears. That is a nightmare to fix on those old Singers. Replacing gears means taking the whole machine apart, and sometimes you cant even find parts. I would be furious if I opened it up and saw that after trusting a 4 star rating. People really need to spell out what broke, not just give a star count.
