Hardware store veneer edge banding is a waste of time

I used to buy those rolls of iron-on edge banding from the big box store for quick jobs. But after about 6 months, I noticed the edges would start peeling on kitchen cabinets near the sink. Switched to PSA backed veneer from a specialty supplier about 2 years ago and it holds up way better. The extra cost is maybe 30 cents per foot but I have not had a single callback since. Has anyone else found a better option for high moisture areas?

Is it bad that I've considered using duct tape as edge banding just to prove a point to myself?

Skip the big box stuff entirely for kitchens and bathrooms man. I learned this the hard way after redoing a whole set of cabinets twice in two years. The PSA backed edge banding is the way to go, but you gotta make sure the surface is super clean and dry before you stick it down. What really sealed the deal for me was using a silicone caulk along the seam where the edge banding meets the sink cutout. That extra barrier keeps moisture from creeping under the edge and peeling it off. For really high moisture spots like right next to the sink, I've started using the 3M adhesive backed stuff with a rubber roller to really press it into the corners. Takes a few extra minutes per cabinet but I havent had a single peel since I switched to that method.

Thought I had it figured out but you just made me rethink my whole approach honestly.
