My mentor at the shop in Dayton said "you're not building a box, you're building a door that happens to have a box around it," and it changed how I fit every face frame
I was complaining to him about a run of 12 shaker doors where the gaps kept coming out uneven no matter how careful I was on the table saw. He said that line and then showed me he cuts the door first and sizes the opening to match, not the other way around. Do you guys build to the opening or build the door first?
Building the door first is backwards for me. I run cabinet doors on a 36 inch shaker setup and I always size the opening to the finished frame, not the other way. Wood moves after you cut it, so if you build the door to a fixed opening you're chasing a gap that keeps changing. I cut my frames, let them sit a day, then measure and build doors to fit. Gaps come out dead even every time. Your mentor's line sounds good in a shop story but it would wreck my process.
