Rant: dropped $340 on a used Castle pocket hole machine and it saved my whole kitchen job
I was about to hand drill 68 pocket holes for a set of maple face frames and quoted the client too low to afford a new one, so I grabbed a used Castle TSM-22 off a guy in Fresno for $340. That thing chewed through all 68 holes in under an hour with zero tearout, and I honestly think it paid for itself on that one job alone. What's the one tool you bought used that either saved your butt or turned out to be a total dud?
Man, I gotta disagree on the paid-for-itself call. A $340 used machine that runs 68 holes in an hour is nice, but at a buck or two a hole you're looking at maybe $70 to $100 of value, so it ate into the loss from a job you underbid, it didn't wipe it out. The real lesson here is you quoted too low, because a used Castle at that price is a good find but it won't cover a bad bid. Still, no tearout on maple is no joke, so I get why you're happy with it.
