Shoutout to the old timer who taught me about grain direction

Had a job in Portland last year where I was fighting with tearout on some red oak. This guy named Hank, must have been 70, walked over from the next bench and said "you're going the wrong way up the mountain, kid." Spent 10 minutes showing me how to read the grain like a map. Has anyone else had someone give them a tip that felt obvious after but saved your whole project?

Honestly, "going the wrong way up the mountain" is the perfect way to put it. I had a similar moment with my uncle in his garage when I was 16, trying to plane a piece of pine and it looked like a porcupine exploded on it. He just sighed, flipped the board around, and it was like butter. Felt like a total idiot but that one tip probably saved me from quitting woodworking right then and there. Tbh, I still stop and stare at a piece of grain for way too long before making the first cut because of him.

That absolutely nails it. @allen.amy you hit on something real there. I had a similar moment trying to glue up a panel once. Was going at it with way too much clamp pressure and the board bowed right in the middle. Old timer Bob comes over, just loosens everything, lays a couple cauls on top, and says "wood needs to breathe, not be squeezed to death." Felt like an idiot but I've never tightened a clamp the same way since. Still catch myself squinting at grain like it owes me money before I run a plane over it.
