That time an old timer named Bill told me to stop measuring and just use a story stick

I was building a set of built-in bookshelves for a client in Seattle last month and kept messing up the spacing. Every time I measured with a tape, something was off by a 16th or so. Bill who used to build custom kitchens for 40 years saw me frustrated and said put the tape down and cut a stick to the exact space. Mark it up with a knife. Transfer it. No numbers. I did it and everything fit perfect on the first try. Anyone else ever ditch the tape for a story stick?

Read this exact same thing from an old carpenter on a woodworking forum once.

Good story sticks are legit. I've got a few hanging in my shop for window casings and stuff. Once you start using them you realize how much time you waste reading numbers and doing math. Bill sounds like a legend.
