Warning: I was dead set against pocket screws on face frames until I saw a guy's shop in Asheville
I have been building cabinets for 14 years and I always cut real mortise and tenon joints for my face frames. I thought pocket screws were for guys who did not care about quality. Last month I drove up to Asheville to buy a used drum sander off a guy named Rick and his whole shop was full of cabinets. He had a face frame sitting there with pocket screws and I kind of made a face. He laughed and showed me a cabinet from 2013 that has been in a rental kitchen and still tight as can be. He said the screws pull the joint tight and the glue does the real work, and honestly I could not argue with 11 years of use. I still think they look ugly if you leave them where someone can see them, but for the back side of a frame they hold up fine. Has anyone else switched over after years of doing it the hard way, or am I about to regret this on my next kitchen?
