Found out last Tuesday I'd been hooking up my toner probe backwards for 3 months
So I'm at this new build out in Mesa, 22 units in a row, and I've been cruising through them pretty proud of myself. Then my lead hands me his probe and says try mine, yours seems slow. Two seconds in and the tone jumps out clean on a pair I already tagged, and I just stand there staring at the thing. Turns out the whole time I had the alligator clip on the ground side of the jack and the probe tip pointed at the wrong end of the run, so I was basically scanning air and getting lucky on short runs. I look back at my notes from the past few weeks and half my tags are guesses I double checked by yelling down the hall for someone to see if the light blinked. My lead didn't even bust me hard, he just said a lot of guys fumble that clip for a while, which somehow made it worse. Now I want to know how many of you figured out your probe or wand setup the hard way, because I can't be the only one who looked like a rookie in front of a whole crew.
Yelling down the hall for someone to see if the light blinked" is basically how half the trade operates, so I wouldn't sweat it. Having the clip backwards for a while just means you were doing twice the work, not that you broke anything.
