Had to choose between a crawl space full of spiders or a roof in 95 degree heat yesterday

The job was a rewire for an old house in Tempe, and the only paths were a tight crawl space the homeowner said had 'some webs' or the roof with direct sun. I picked the roof, thinking heat beats bugs. Three hours later, my shirt was soaked through and I drank two gallons of water. Anyone have a better trick for picking the lesser of two evils on a job like that?

Made the same call last summer. Thought I was smart avoiding the spiders until I basically became soup up there.

Spiders are just part of the deal, you get used to them. A bit of heat is better than missing the whole summer, michaels95. You just need a good fan and to stay hydrated, it's not that hard.

Flip it around and think about time. The roof gets worse every minute you're up there. The crawl space stays the same temp and bug level no matter how long you take. So if you can get the job done fast, roof. If it's gonna take all day, crawl space. I'd rather deal with a few spiders for ten hours than pass out from heat stroke. Plus you can suit up in coveralls and a respirator for the crawl space. Nothing fixes a roof in Arizona in July.
