Overheard a guy at the hardware store say all coax is basically the same

He was telling his buddy to just buy the cheapest roll for his DIY project because 'it all carries the signal.' Honestly, that's how you end up with a callback for noise issues in six months. What's the worst piece of bad advice you've heard a homeowner get?

Wait, he said ALL coax is the same? Like the super thin cheap stuff is the same as quad-shielded RG6? That's actually insane. The signal loss on junk cable is huge, especially over any real distance.

Had the same view for years, always bought the thick stuff. Then I ran some actual tests with a meter on different runs in my attic. The loss difference on short home runs, like under 50 feet, was way smaller than I expected. For long cable TV or antenna pulls it matters, but for most people hooking up a single TV the cheap cable works fine. Changed my whole outlook on it.
