That cheap fusion splicer from Amazon actually held up for 6 months

I was always told you gotta spend at least $5k on a fusion splicer, but I grabbed one off Amazon for $800 last summer just to see. Ran 200 splices on a job near Rogers Park in Chicago and the loss readings were solid. It finally crapped out on a rainy Tuesday, but it paid for itself twice over. Anyone else try the cheapo route or am I just lucky?

My buddy Mike bought one for $600 and it lasted exactly two jobs before the screen went black.

$600 for two jobs? That stings. I've been down that road before. First thing I'd do is check if it's under warranty, some of those cheaper handhelds have a 30 day or 90 day thing but you gotta push them on it. If the warranty's shot, try a hard reset by holding the power and volume buttons down for like 20 seconds. Sometimes the screen just decides to take a nap. And if that doesn't work, take it apart and reseat the ribbon cable inside, that fixed a black screen on a similar unit I had back in the day.
