Vent: I just hit 500 attic runs and I was totally wrong about the prep

For years I thought the fastest way was to just shove the cable and go, no real plan. Then I had a job in a 1920s house with zero insulation and a maze of old wires. I spent three hours up there, and my helper below said I only got two drops done. That was the wake up call. Now I spend ten minutes looking at the layout from below, marking joists with chalk, and I can do the same job in forty five. Has anyone else found that slowing down at the start actually saves a ton of time later?

Wait, only two drops in three hours? That's insane, I would have lost my mind. No wonder you changed your whole system.

Sounds like you just got unlucky with a bad house. Most attics are straightforward if you know what you're doing. That ten minutes of planning adds up over hundreds of jobs, and you lose your rhythm stopping to draw maps. I've done thousands just going by feel and it's always been faster for me.
