Hit 1,000 shutter repairs last month and didn't even notice until I checked my log
I was going through my repair logbook last weekend and saw I had just passed 1,000 shutter repairs since I started keeping records in 2018. That number surprised me because I don't think of myself as a specialist, but I guess fixing stuck blades on old Nikons adds up. Most of those were the classic Copal square shutters from the 70s and 80s that get gummed up with old lubricant. Has anyone else had a milestone catch them off guard like that?

Read somewhere that Copal shutters from that era had lubricant issues because the original stuff was plant based and basically turned to glue over time. Makes sense why so many of those 70s and 80s cameras show up with sticky blades needing a full clean. 1,000 repairs is a solid number either way.

Yeah, that's exactly right @kimr33. I've heard the same thing about those old plant based lubricants. They dry out and get gummy over the decades, which is why those Copal shutters lock up so often. And once you clean them out and relube with modern synthetic stuff, they usually run smooth for years.
