I finally found the source of that shutter lag - and it was a gummy magnet.

Was working on a Canon AE-1 last Tuesday, this one had a slow shutter on 1/1000. Dug in and found the electromagnet had a buildup of old lubricant mixed with dust. Cleaned it with alcohol and a q-tip, and bam, shutter speeds were all back to normal. Has anyone else had this issue with older Canon bodies, or was mine just really neglected?

Funny how the smallest gunked-up part can mess up the whole rhythm of something. It's like how a single sticky key on a keyboard can make you feel like you're fighting the machine.

Had a sticky 'D' key on my old laptop that made typing feel like a workout.
