Showerthought: I finally quit using lighter fluid on shutter blades and a $9 bottle of naphtha did the job
For years I swore by lighter fluid for cleaning oil off leaf shutter blades, and I kept telling people in my shop in Dayton that it was fine. Last month I got a sticky Copal shutter from a guy's old rangefinder and the fluid left a haze I could not get off the blades. An old timer at the Columbus camera show told me to try plain naphtha from the hardware store, and it was $9 for a quart. I put one drop on a piece of lens tissue and the oil lifted with no film and no residue. The shutter fired clean at every speed from 1 to 1/500 on the first try. Has anyone else switched to naphtha, or do you have a better solvent for old grease?
