The cheap multimeter that made me doubt every reading I ever took

Bought a $25 multimeter from a bargain bin in Portland last month to keep in my truck, then compared its resistance readings against my shop Fluke and saw a 40% difference on the same vintage lens barrel. That cheap thing has been lying to me on every job I used it for, and I probably chased phantom shorts for years because of it. Anyone else catch bad tools like this or do I just shop at the wrong surplus stores?

Bargain bin test gear is a gamble every time, and a 40% swing on resistance makes that thing worse than useless for anything precise. Once you catch one bad reading, you start second-guessing every value that cheap meter ever showed you, even the ones that looked right. A buddy of mine found the same problem with a discount clamp meter, so it's not just you, those surplus stores are full of lemons.
