Chatted with a plumber friend who flipped my view on basement suites
My buddy Mike, a plumber in Edmonton, ranted for 20 minutes about how most people ignore drainage when converting basements. He said they focus on fancy finishes but forget the slope-then water pools under drywall. Made me check my own rental suite's floor; turns out it's flat as a pancake. Why doesn't anyone shout about grading before permits?

Makes me wonder what other hidden corners we're all ignoring until they flood.

That article about the aging pipelines in the Midwest stuck with me. I think it said over 60% of the drinking water infrastructure in some states is over 50 years old and nobody checks it until a pipe bursts and floods a whole neighborhood. Same thing with those old coal ash ponds near rivers, people just forget they're there until a heavy rain washes it all downstream. Its like we're all just hoping nothing breaks instead of actually looking at what's falling apart.
