Found a hidden water leak with a $20 moisture meter from Home Depot

My basement in Mississauga had that musty smell for months and I kept blaming the dehumidifier. Finally grabbed a General MMD4E moisture meter and poked around the drywall near the floor joists. It lit up like crazy behind the baseboard in the corner near the utility room. Ended up being a slow drip from a pipe behind the wall that I never would have spotted without that thing. Anyone else find hidden damage with one of those tools?

My uncle had the exact same issue in his basement in Brampton last year. He was chasing that musty smell for weeks, even tore out some old carpet thinking that was it. Ended up borrowing a similar meter from a buddy and found a leak right behind the drywall in the laundry room that had been slowly rotting the studs. Saved him from a much bigger repair bill down the road.

Rotting the studs" - that's wild. I didn't even think about stuff like that happening behind the wall. Makes me wonder what else is hiding in my basement that I haven't found yet.
