Friend told me I was wasting money by not checking the energy rating on my furnace filter

I always bought the cheapest MERV 1 filters at Home Depot until my buddy who runs HVAC in Calgary showed me how a better filter can actually lower your hydro bill by about 15-20 bucks a month, so now I spend $8 on MERV 8 ones... has anyone else noticed a difference with their heating costs?

Honestly @murray.cole I was the same way until I actually tried it, and yeah I feel like my heating bill went down a bit that first winter. Not a huge difference but enough that it covers the cost of the nicer filters plus some. I mean maybe it's just me but I notice the air in my place feels less dusty too, which is nice when you're stuck inside for months. It's one of those small things that actually makes a difference once you try it.

Wait, does your buddy do side work? I had a guy rewire my thermostat once and he told me the filter thing too but I still just grab whatever's on sale lol.
