Had to pick between a fixer-upper in Hamilton or a tiny condo in Burlington last spring

I went with the fixer-upper because it was $80,000 cheaper and I figured I'd learn some skills, but after 9 months of constant drywall dust and plumbing surprises I'm wondering if the smaller space with no projects would have been smarter - has anyone else regretted taking on a big reno just to afford a home?

Your equity's growing faster with the sweat equity though even if your sanity isn't.

Man people love throwing around the phrase "sweat equity" like it's some magical solution to everything. But what about the actual sweat you're putting in, like the literal hours and stress? Is the growth really worth it when you're losing sleep over drywall or whatever project you're tackling. I gotta ask - how do you draw the line between building value and just burning yourself out for a house you might not even want to stay in long term?
