My view on buying a condo in Vancouver completely flipped after my 2022 offer got outbid by $200k.

I used to think getting any property was a win, but now I only look at places with a separate rental suite because that extra income is the only way I can see making the mortgage work, so has anyone else switched their entire buying strategy like this?

That's a brutal way to have your perspective change. Are you only looking at older places now for that suite layout, or are new builds even offering that setup anymore? The math must force some tough choices on location versus having that rental income.

Totally used to think new builds were the only smart move. All that shiny stuff. But yeah, that math is a real eye-opener. Now I'm only looking at older places, the ones with that proper separate suite. New places just don't build them like that anymore, it's all open concept junk. The rental income from a real suite changes the whole game, makes a worse location actually work.
