Overheard a guy at Home Depot say you can save $50 a month just by switching to a heat pump water heater

I was grabbing some drywall anchors and this older guy was talking to the plumbing guy about his power bill. Said his went from $130 to $80 after swapping his old tank for a heat pump model. I've been looking at mine since it's from 2008 and probably costing me way more than I think. Has anyone here actually done the switch and seen real savings on their hydro bill?

Oh man, $50 a month is no joke. That'd cover a decent dinner out or a few extra coffees. But I'm kinda wondering, did he mention the upfront cost? I looked into them a while back and it seemed like the unit itself was way pricier than a regular electric one, plus you gotta think about installation if you're not handy with that stuff. Like, how long would it actually take to break even?

Does anyone talk about the hidden cost of leaving that thing on all day just to keep the garage at a "not freezing" temp? I feel like $50 a month assumes you're running it smart, but a lot of folks just crank it and forget it. That monthly bill could shoot way higher if you're not careful with the settings.
