Saw a house in Hamilton with a baffling window placement issue

I went to an open house in Hamilton last weekend and I swear the builder must have been on something. The living room had a giant window facing directly into the neighbour's brick wall like 4 feet away. Zero light came in, it was basically just a view of old mortar. Then the kitchen had a tiny window above the sink that looked out at a nice treeline. Why would you put the big window facing a wall and the small one facing the trees? Made me wonder if some developers just don't care about actual livability. Has anyone else toured newer builds around the GTA that have weird design choices like that?

That big window argument is probably letting in way more natural light than you'd expect. Brick walls reflect indirect light pretty well. The kitchen window might be smaller for appliance ventilation reasons. Builders aren't clueless, they just prioritize different things than buyers do.

Totally agree with you on the brick walls bouncing light around, that's a solid point people miss. I've noticed in some older builds the big windows are placed to catch morning sun in the living room while the kitchen gets afternoon shade so it stays cooler. Builders definitely think about stuff like heat gain and appliance clearances first, even if it doesn't look perfect from the street.
