Can we talk about the guy who told me stud finders are useless?

Met this old carpenter at a MEC parking lot in Halifax last spring. He said he never uses stud finders, just knocks on the wall and listens for the change in sound. I thought he was full of it until I tried his method on my basement wall. Took me maybe 30 seconds to find the stud, no batteries needed, no false readings from weird wiring. Now I only grab my stud finder for plaster walls or weird old construction. Has anyone else ditched their tools for old school methods that actually work better?

Knockin' works fine till it doesn't - my ears aren't always right in old houses.

my ears aren't always right" - you ever try one of those cheap endoscope cameras? Makes it way easier to spot where the knockin is actually coming from.
