Heard a kid at a bike shop say something that made me feel old

I was at MEC in Toronto last week dropping off my old Kona for a tune-up, and this teenager was asking the mechanic if they could get disc brakes on a bike that clearly only had rim brake mounts. The guy explained it politely, but it hit me that I've been riding since before disc brakes were standard on mountain bikes. Back in 2003 we just accepted that wet rims meant no stopping. Has anyone else had a moment where you realized the gear you grew up with is basically ancient history now?

Honestly, I get feeling old but is it really that deep? You're acting like rim brakes are some lost tech from the stone age. They still work fine, even in the wet if you know how to brake. That kid probably just watched some YouTube video about disc brakes and thinks they're necessary for cruising around the block. People get obsessed with gear upgrades when most of us could still shred on a 2003 bike with cantis if we had to. It's not ancient history, it's just different.
