Showerthought: watched a rider go down on the Coquihalla near the Great Bear snowshed, now I gear up different
I was heading east on the Coquihalla last August, just past the Great Bear snowshed, when a guy two bikes ahead of me hit a patch of loose gravel in a merge lane and dropped his bike at about 80 km/h. He walked away because he was in full gear, but his riding buddy behind him had no jacket, just a hoodie, and you could see him freeze up and almost go down too. Since that day I won't ride that stretch without my armored jacket even in 30 degree heat, and I plan my fuel stops so I'm never rushing the summit. My buddy says I'm being paranoid and that gear just makes you ride harder, and honestly I get why some people think that. But I keep coming back to that hoodie guy shaking on the shoulder for 20 minutes. So where do you all land, is full gear on a hot highway ride just smart, or does it make some riders too confident? And has anyone else changed how they ride after seeing a crash on that specific highway?
