Spent 3 months fixing my route through the Rockies

I used to plan my rides from Calgary to Vancouver on a map and end up wasting 2 hours on bad backroads. Switched to the Canadian Riders Hub route tool and found a cutoff near Revelstoke that saves me 45 minutes each way on my delivery runs. Has anyone else found a hidden shortcut that totally changed their regular trip?

Buddy of mine does the same Calgary to Vancouver run and he swears by a little gravel road that cuts through the Monashee range. He found it by accident when his GPS died and he started guessing, says it shaves a full hour off with almost no traffic. Now he won't even look at the main highways unless the weather's bad. Makes you wonder how many of those old logging roads are still totally usable if you just take a chance on them.

Pick up a forestry map from a gas station in Kamloops and you'll see dozens of those old unpaved routes spidering off the highways. Some of them are completely overgrown and not worth trying. But a bunch of them are still graded every so often by logging crews or the local county. I've heard people swear by a stretch called the Old Cascade Highway for cutting traffic between Hope and Kelowna. You just have to watch for washouts after rain and keep your spare tire ready for a puncture or two. Have you ever tried any of those hidden shortcuts or just stick to the paved stuff?
