That one comment about my chain lube routine totally changed how I ride

Last week at the Ottawa group ride, a guy named Mike watched me spray lube on my chain and said 'you're just flinging it everywhere, it's not even getting in the rollers.' He was right. I was just blasting the outside and wasting half the can. Now I apply it drop by drop on each link, let it sit 5 minutes, then wipe the extra off. Has anyone else had some random rider give them advice that totally changed their maintenance?

That Mike guy sounds like he knew his stuff. My game changer came from a crusty old timer at a gravel race who saw me using a dry lube in wet conditions. He handed me a squirt bottle of motor oil and said "stop overthinking it, just use this." Seriously, a thin coat of 30 weight on a clean chain has been smoother and quieter than any fancy bike specific lube I ever bought, and it costs pennies per application. Now I only break out the expensive stuff for my road bike in perfect dry weather.

Mike from that group ride sounds like he saved you a lot of cash and frustration. It reminds me of how I used to change my truck's oil filter every time but never bothered cleaning the drain plug threads until a neighbor pointed it out. Now I'm way more careful about the little steps that seem like nothing but actually make a huge difference. It's funny how most people just copy what they see on YouTube or from friends, but one random dude with greasy hands can show you something simple that changes everything. I've noticed this pattern everywhere from cooking to fixing stuff around the house - someone who actually does the work will always have better habits than the guys just reading the manual.
