The old guy at the Tim Hortons in Sudbury told me my chain was too tight and I've been thinking about it for 2 weeks
Everyone in my local group keeps saying run your chain on the loose side of the spec, and I bought into it for a while. But two weeks ago I was parked at the Tim Hortons on Regent Street in Sudbury, and this older fella in a beat up leather vest walked past my bike and stopped. He pointed at my rear sprocket and said "that chain's got no slack at the top, you'll eat your output bearing by fall." I kind of brushed him off at first because the internet told me tight was fine. Then he pulled out his phone and showed me a photo of his own bearing that let go on the 69 highway near Lively, and the inside of his case was chewed to hell. I checked the play when I got home and it was under half an inch cold, which is way tighter than what the shop manual for my bike actually asks for. I backed it off and the whine I'd been hearing in 4th gear is gone. So now I'm the guy saying check your manual instead of the forum, and I feel like I owe that stranger a coffee. Has anyone else had a random parking lot chat like that actually fix something before a shop even saw it?
