TIL from a guy at a Tim Hortons in Thunder Bay that my trailer lights short is a grounding thing, not a wiring harness thing
Pulled into a Tim Hortons just outside Thunder Bay last week after a run up to Dryden, and this older fella in a beat up F150 noticed my trailer lights flickering every time I hit a bump. I was about to buy a whole new 7 pin harness because I figured the wiring was shot, and he stopped me cold. He said 9 times out of 10 it's a bad ground on the trailer frame, not the harness, and to run a dedicated ground wire from the plug straight to bare metal on the trailer instead of relying on the ball and coupler. Cost me $6 in wire and connectors at a Canadian Tire and about 20 minutes with a wire brush and a drill. Lights have been solid for 400 km now, no flicker, no gremlins. I've been towing for 11 years and always just replaced parts when stuff acted up. Has anyone else had a ground fix work when you swore it was something else, or am I just late to this one?
