Why does nobody talk about using a old bike tube as a strap?

I was hauling a lawn chair on my rear rack and the bungee cord snapped halfway down the street. Grabbed a cut up inner tube from the shed and that thing held tight for the whole 15 km ride. Has anyone else found random bike parts work better than the real stuff?

Yeah old tubes are great for that. I use strips of them to strap bags to my basket all the time, way more grip than bungees and they don't rot as fast as you'd think. You ever try using a piece as a makeshift chainstay protector?

Gotta admit, I was always a little skeptical about using old tubes for stuff like that. Figured they'd just dry rot and fall apart after a season. But @jade_butler you might have just sold me on it, especially the chainstay protector idea. I've got a ratty old tube kicking around my shed that was going in the trash, might try wrapping it around the stay with some zip ties and see how long it holds up.
