First snow storm hit and my garage shelves couldn't take it
We got 14 inches in Minneapolis last Tuesday and I went to grab the winter tire set from the top shelf, only to watch the whole bracket sag and dump 80 pounds of rubber onto my workbench. Turns out the particleboard shelf I'd put up in June was never rated for that kind of weight, and the moisture from the tires just made it worse. Has anyone else had their storage setup fail right when you need it most, or am I the only one who skips the load rating on shelf brackets?

Did you check what those brackets were actually rated for when you put them up? I made the same mistake years ago with a heavy tool chest, and I learned the hard way that most cheap particleboard shelves are only meant for light stuff like boxes of holiday decorations or old clothes. Even worse, once they get damp from something like tires or a humid basement, they lose what little strength they had. I started anchoring everything to the wall studs and using solid plywood instead, and I also keep heavy stuff low to the ground now. It is a pain to redo, but it beats cleaning up broken stuff and worrying about your safety every time you reach for something.
