Plastic bins on concrete floors wrecked my wheel covers
I spent the winter storing my spare set of alloys in those big blue totes sitting directly on the garage slab. Pulled them out last Tuesday for spring rotation and every single tire had a flat spot on the bottom, plus mold spots where moisture had pooled under the plastic. Turns out concrete sweats and the bins trap that humidity like a greenhouse. My buddy who restores old Mustangs told me he saw the same thing happen to a customer's vintage wire wheels. He suggested laying down cheap plywood or even old carpet scraps under the bins to break the cold contact. Also cracked the lids slightly so air can move instead of sealing them tight. I would've guessed the sealed lid was protecting them, but it just made a sauna. Anybody else found a better way to keep tires on concrete without ruining them?
Man that greenhouse thing got me. I always thought sealing em up tight was the smart move too, figured it kept the moisture out. But yeah, you're right about the concrete sweating, I've seen the bottom of my own tubs feel wet in the summer and never put two and two together. The flat spot thing makes total sense now too, the cold floor probably makes the rubber stiff and the weight of the car does the rest. I'm gonna steal that plywood trick for sure, and cracking the lids sounds way better than my old way. Thanks for posting this, you probably saved me from ruining a set of wheels myself.
The plywood trick is solid, and honestly it makes me feel dumb for not thinking of it myself. My own "genius" move was stacking tires flat on the concrete and calling it a day, which basically turned them into oval-shaped hockey pucks after one winter. The flat spot thing got me too, I thought the weight of the car was the only culprit, but the cold floor stiffening the rubber makes way more sense. Guess I'll be the guy with scrap plywood and slightly cracked lids now, which is fitting since I've always been a "learn the hard way" kind of person.
