Showerthought: a guy at the swap meet in Tulsa told me he's kept his '68 Mustang under a tarp for 12 years
I was digging through a parts bin at the swap meet off Admiral in Tulsa two Saturdays ago when this older guy next to me mentioned he parks his '68 Mustang outside under a cheap blue tarp year round. He said he's done it for 12 years and "it still fires right up." I didn't argue with him, but I kept thinking about the paint and the floor pans the whole drive home. My grandpa kept his truck in a dirt floor shed with a sheet of plywood under it to block the ground damp, and honestly that old shed held up better than some garages I've seen. These days I see folks renting a climate controlled unit for $150 a month, which is fine if you want that, but I can't help wondering if the basics got forgotten. Check the ground, keep air moving, and keep the sun off it, that was the whole playbook when I was a kid. The tarp thing bugs me though, because condensation collects on the underside and just sits there against the roof. Has anyone here run a tarp long term and actually checked the paint under it after a few years?
Did you ever pull the tarp off to check, or did he just go by it firing up? Tarps are the worst for that because they trap moisture and the paint blisters from the inside out. I'd rather leave a car out in the open than wrap it in plastic, at least the air moves.
