Tried stacking car tires vs standing them up for winter storage... big difference

Last fall I stored my spare set of tires flat stacked in the garage for 3 months. Came back and two of them had flat spots near the bottom edge. This year I got a cheap $15 tire rack that stands them upright and rotates them every few weeks. No more weird bulges or wobbles when I put them back on. Has anyone else noticed deformation with stacked tires, or is my garage just too damp or something?

Stacked tires absolutely flatten out over time, especially in cold garages where the rubber gets stiffer and won't bounce back. Fifteen bucks for a rack is way cheaper than replacing tires with flat spots. Damp garage just makes the rubber degrade faster, but the stacking is what causes the actual distortion.
