Wrote off those $20 metal storage shelves from the hardware store for 3 winters, then my buddy's garage changed my mind
I always figured cheap stamped steel shelves would bow under a set of mounted snow tires, so I stuck with my old wooden rack build from 2019. My neighbor Dave has run the same $20 bolt-together metal unit in his unheated garage outside Buffalo since 2021, holding four tires plus a pair of jack stands, and nothing has bent or rusted through. When my wood rack started sagging and splitting last November, I finally grabbed the same shelf unit. It has held 320 pounds of tires on the bottom two levels all winter with zero flex, and the powder coat has not chipped from sliding wheels on and off. Now I have two of them bolted to the wall studs and my garage floor is finally clear. Anyone else ditch homemade wood storage for the cheap metal stuff and actually stick with it?
Man, I feel this in my bones. I did the same thing for years, built this whole wooden rack out of 2x4s back in 2018 thinking I was being smart and saving money, and by the third winter the thing was twisting and sagging so bad I was scared to walk under it. My brother kept telling me to just grab the cheap metal ones but I figured no way that thin steel holds up to a set of Blizzaks. Finally caved when my rack gave out in February and I had tires rolling around the garage. Two winters now on the bolt-together units and they have not budged one bit, even with my fat ass leaning on them while I wrestle wheels on. The powder coat thing is real too, mine still look new even after dragging steel wheels across them. Feels good to finally have floor space again, right?
