Gave a kid a fake reference number at work and got promoted 2 months later
Last month at my shop I told a fresh apprentice to ask for part number F715W over the counter just to mess with him, but the counter guy actually played along and handed him a master parts catalog that ended up teaching him more than I could in a week. Has anyone else accidentally created a training tool out of a prank?

Honestly, I gotta push back on this. You didn't create a training tool, you just got lucky that your prank went right instead of making that kid feel stupid in front of everyone.
Tbh, that counter guy is the real hero here, not you. He's the one who turned a dumb joke into something useful while you were just trying to mess with someone.
Ngl, celebrating this like a win feels like a cop out. You should probably just own up to the prank and thank the counter guy instead of patting yourself on the back.

Man, @claire958, you're acting like this guy committed a federal crime. It was a prank with a stuffed bear, not bullying. Kids joke around like that all the time, and that counter guy just rolled with it. Sometimes things work out fine without everyone dissecting it like a psychology experiment.
