Got passed over for a promotion 3 times before I tried this one weird thing
I was stuck as a junior analyst for 2 years at a marketing firm in Austin. Kept applying for senior roles and kept getting rejected. Finally asked my boss for the real reason and she said I didn't talk enough in meetings. So I started forcing myself to ask one question or make one comment every single meeting. After 3 months I got the promotion. Has anyone else had success just by appearing more visible?

Oh wow, this is literally my story! I went through the same thing at my old job in Phoenix. I was a quiet person naturally, so I'd just sit there and take notes in meetings. My boss finally told me I looked disinterested even though I was totally paying attention. So I started prepping one thing to say before every meeting, even if it was just "hey can you repeat that part about the budget?" After two months of that, people started treating me different and I got the senior spot three months later. It's wild how much just being heard matters in corporate America.

Used to be one of those people who thought just doing the work was enough. Figured talking more in meetings was fake or performative, you know? But reading this makes me realize how much of "showing up" is actually about being visible, not just producing. Maybe I've been making it harder on myself than it needs to be, especially when I see how small prep can change how people read you.
