I keep seeing people at my company in Seattle ask for a raise without any numbers to back it up. They just say 'I work hard.'

Happened to watch a buddy of mine try this exact thing at a coffee shop in Portland. He walked up to his manager all confident and said "I just think I deserve more because I really care about the job." The manager just looked at him blank and said "okay, let me know when you have something concrete to show me." He never got the raise and quit three months later. Numbers matter even if they feel cold and boring.

Without any numbers" is just asking to be ignored.

What if the point is bigger than just the numbers?
