I watched my manager get promoted after 4 months of doing nothing and it changed how I pick jobs
Worked at a logistics office in Denver for 2 years and busted my butt, then some guy who started 3 months after me got the team lead spot because he played golf with the regional director every Friday. I quit 6 weeks later and now my first interview question is always who my actual boss would be and how long they have been there. Anyone else learned to size up the boss instead of the company?
Tbh asking who your actual boss would be is smart but the golf thing is a different problem. That guy didn't get promoted because his boss was bad at picking people, he got promoted because he had a direct line to the regional director that you never had. So knowing your boss helps, sure, but what really matters is whether the people above them even notice your work. I've seen good managers who still can't get their team promoted because they have zero pull upstairs.
zero pull upstairs" is the whole ballgame honestly. You can be the best manager on earth but if nobody above you is fighting for your team, you're stuck. The golf thing wasn't really about golf, it was about having somebody in the room who remembers your name.
