PSA: A meeting at my old job in Phoenix taught me to always ask about the budget first.

I spent a whole week planning a project, only to be told in the review there was zero money for it. The manager just said, 'We assumed you'd check the numbers.' Has anyone else learned this the hard way?

Yep, budget talk is always step one now.

And it's wild how that first budget number just... kills a lot of the fun ideas before they even get drawn up.

Totally get that! Had a friend try to plan a simple patio cover last month and the first three meetings were just about what they could actually afford. Ended up scaling way back from the fancy pergula to a basic aluminum awning. It really does set the tone for everything that comes after.
