Ran into my old high school teacher at the grocery store and she told me something that's been stuck in my head all week

She said I was too focused on climbing the ladder instead of figuring out what ladder I actually wanted to be on... I've been in corporate sales for about 12 years now and never really stopped to ask if I even liked it. She retired early because she switched careers at 45 into something she actually cared about. Has anyone else had a moment like that where one comment from someone made you question your whole path?

Ngl that comment hits hard because so many people just get stuck in the momentum of life. You wake up one day and realize you've been climbing a ladder that was put there by someone else or by circumstance. Like I see this all the time with friends who went straight from college into jobs they picked at 22 and now they're 40 wondering how they ended up here. It's wild how a single sentence from someone who barely knows your daily grind can shake your whole foundation. That teacher probably saw something in you that you stopped seeing in yourself.

Funny you mention that @anthony426, I was just reading about this concept called "unconscious momentum" where people keep moving just because they're already moving. It's scary how easy it is to mistake activity for progress. That teacher line really does hit different when you realize how often we let other people's expectations write our scripts for us.
