TIL a quick chat at a tech meetup in Austin saved my next interview

I was at a small meetup last month and mentioned I was prepping for a senior dev role. A guy who works at the company told me they always ask a specific system design question about scaling a payment processor. I spent two nights studying that exact problem. Got the job offer yesterday. Anyone else get a tip that changed their interview prep?

Wow, a friend once tipped me off about their weird coding test format... totally saved me.

Ugh, that's the worst feeling, isn't it? I'm so glad you had a friend give you a heads up, @singh.jessica. Some of these tests feel like they're designed to trip you up on purpose, not to see if you can actually code. It makes such a huge difference just knowing what to expect going in.

The weird part is how some companies go out of their way to hide what the test is really about. You'd think they'd want to see if you can solve problems, not if you can guess their secret format. A buddy of mine once spent hours prepping for a technical test that turned out to be 90% trivia about their own product's documentation. Total waste of time. Makes you wonder if they're just seeing who has inside connections instead of actual skill. Has anyone else run into a test that was nothing like the job description suggested?
