A retired cabinet maker told me my layout lines were too pretty to be useful

He watched me spend 15 minutes squaring a face frame with a marking gauge and said 'you're drawing lines for photos, not for cutting', so now I just snap chalk lines and cut fast, but has anyone else had to unlearn the slow careful habits?
