Am I the only one who thinks a $40 magnetic stud finder was money wasted?

I bought one after watching a video of a guy on a job in Columbus swear by it, and it kept flagging my hammer as a stud. I went back to my old $12 one that just beeps, and it's been solid on three framing jobs since. What's the deal, is the cheap kind really the way to go or did I just get a bad one?
